Members of the North End Citizens on Patrol say they're scared of recent violence in the city – which means there's never been a better time for Winnipeggers to get out on the streets and help make their neighbourhoods safer.

The group is putting in extra effort in the North End on the weekend, patrolling the streets to make sure trick or treaters are safe.

Volunteers pounded the pavement along Main Street, Mountain Avenue, Inkster Boulevard and Salter Street on Saturday and Sunday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Tracey Proctor, provincial co-ordinator of the Citizens on Patrol Program (COPP) said the safety patrols let people know that there is something they can do to make their neighbourhood safer.

"There are a lot of people that are nervous and anxious to step outside their door, and maybe we can send a visible message that it's okay, you're safe," she says.

Proctor says that anyone is welcome to join the patrols.
