A suspect was arrested after he went to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 315 in East St. Paul and claimed he was the commander of the local RCMP detachment, police said.

He went to the legion first on Oct. 13 and returned again on Oct. 29, at which point he was arrested, officers said.

Officers later found a variety of police paraphernalia including a police uniform during a search of a Winnipeg home.

Thomas David Hanaway, 52, of Winnipeg was charged with two counts of impersonating a peace officer, two counts of breaching recognizance and four counts of breaching probation.

East St. Paul RCMP officers said they would like to advise the public that Thomas Hanaway, also known as Tom Hanna, is not, nor has he ever been, associated with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
