A 66-year-old man faces charges after a fire was reported at a downtown building.

On Nov. 3, police and fire crews were called to a high-rise building in the 100 block of Carlton Street for a fire that had been set inside a stairwell, said officers.

All tenants managed to escape without injury and the fire was put out.

Damage is pegged at $5,000.

The next day, police were called to the same building to help security staff who had apprehended a man for allegedly trying to start a fire in the washroom.

Following an investigation, the suspect was charged.

Neil Maclellan, 66, of Winnipeg faces a number of charges, including arson and failing to comply with condition of a recognizance, said police.
