The daughter of a woman shot to death in a violent Toronto-area home invasion has been charged in connection with that homicide, York Regional Police say.

Chief Armand La Barge told a news conference Tuesday in Markham, Ont. that Jennifer Pan, 24, has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

The arrest was made Monday evening. She appeared in court in Newmarket, Ont. for a bail hearing earlier Tuesday and is still in custody, said Det. Sgt. Larry Wilson, the lead investigator.

She will be back in court on Nov. 30.

La Barge cautioned that police are still seeking three other suspects.

The Nov. 8 incident occurred at the Markham, Ont. home of Bich Ha and Huei Hann Pan.

At about 10 p.m., three armed suspects are believed to have entered the 238 Helen Ave. home where the Pans lived with Jennifer. Their son is attending university in Hamilton and was not home at the time.

For reasons that are not yet known, the suspects shot both Bich Ha and Huei Hann multiple times while ransacking the house. The suspects allegedly tied up the daughter and left her upstairs.

Paramedics pronounced the 53-year-old woman dead at the scene. Her 57-year-old husband stumbled to a neighbour's home for help. Jennifer allegedly told police she freed herself. She called 911 about 10:30 p.m.

Huei has since been released from hospital and is recovering "in a place of safety," La Barge said. Wilson said Huei is aware his daughter has been charged.

Wilson said the investigation changed direction in roughly the past week after it became clear that Jennifer's and Huei's descriptions of suspects didn't line up.

Wilson said police are not prepared to talk about any possible motive at this time.

No allegations against Jennifer Pan have been proven in a court of law.

La Barge said the investigation remains active, and that police are seeking three individuals:

  • suspect 1 - black male, 20-25 years old, 6'2", muscular build
  • suspect 2 - black male, 20-25 years old, 6'2", skinnier build than suspect 1
  • suspect 3 - white male, 20-25 years old, 6', with a heavier build and a round face

Those descriptions have changed since police began their investigation. Wilson said they were able to interview Huei and some other individuals.

La Barge said the three remaining suspects should be considered armed and extremely dangerous.

"I'm strongly urging these three men to retain counsel and to surrender themselves to police immediately," he said.

La Barge asked anyone with information about the crime to contact police at 1-866-876-5425, ext. 7865 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
