Provincial and federal officials have quarantined a turkey farm in the RM of Rockwood.

Some turkeys have tested positive for an H5 strain of bird flu, but there is no evidence it is the deadly form known as the H5N1 influenza, said provincial officials.

Officials said the owner of the farm notified their veterinarian because the turkeys weren't producing eggs as usual and tests were conducted.

There has been no indication of human illness.

"From a human-health perspective, this is certainly no cause for alarm," said Dr. Joel Kettner, chief provincial public health officer.

Workers at the turkey operation are, however, being contacted and offered preventive anti-viral medication.

Human consumption of turkey products remains safe if the meat is properly prepared, said provincial officials.

The operation where the birds were located has two barns with about 8,200 birds in total.

A small number of those have tested positive and will be culled, said provincial officials.

It's not yet known how the birds contracted the illness.

Officials continue to investigate.
