Winnipeg police and government officials unveiled the new police helicopter Monday morning.

Premier Greg Selinger, Mayor Sam Katz and Winnipeg Police Chief Keith McCaskill were on hand at the announcement.

McCaskill said the helicopter will enable police to better direct officer resources.

"I think it will be safer for the community because there are going to be less car chases. We will be able to arrive on scene a lot faster," he said.

The province and city had previously made a funding agreement for the helicopter.

The city spent $3.5 million to buy it, while the province will put in $1.3 million annually to cover operating costs.

The helicopter, an EC 120B Hummingbird, includes thermal imaging to track suspects, along with a large spotlight and a live video feed capability.

Police displayed the helicopter for media Monday at Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg 17 Wing.

The helicopter is expected to be in the air assisting police beginning in January.
