About 20 per cent of Canadians admit to having driven when they believe they are at or over the legal alcohol limit, according to a new survey.

The CAA Traffic Safety Culture survey looked at responses from 2,000 Canadians, including 400 from Manitoba.

Even though one in five Canadians admitted to drinking and driving, the survey also found that 98 per cent of Manitobans said it is socially unacceptable for a person to drive when they've had too much alcohol to drink.

"People tell us they know it's unacceptable to drink and drive, but these poll results tell us their actions contradict what people believe to be acceptable," said Liz Peters, a spokesperson for CAA Manitoba.

CAA urges people to plan ahead and have a designated driver, or call a cab, take public transit or call CAA for its "Drive You Home" service.
