A program in some Winnipeg schools is offering students of all backgrounds the chance to learn the Ojibwe language.

"It's very exciting because we are bringing the language back," said Sophie Boulanger, a support teacher.

Boulanger said traditional languages are disappearing at an alarming rate, something her students have also noticed.

Student Solomon Stevenson said his grandma knows Ojibwe -Cree, but his mother has forgotten how to speak it.

Currently, the program is being offered in six different schools in Winnipeg.

Ken Whitecloud of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs wants the federal and provincial governments to take note and expand it.

"It's a good start. I don't believe it's enough. It should be available in more schools," said Whitecloud.

The Winnipeg School Division is hoping to expand the program in coming years.
