A 66-year-old man was killed in a hit and run on Christmas Eve. He walking across the road to celebrate the holiday at his daughter's house at the time.

Police say the man – Reginald Blackbird – was hit at about 5:40 p.m., on Fife Street between Inkster Boulevard and Maple Glen Drive.

The police investigation found that after the driver hit Blackbird, he reversed the vehicle and then drove around Blackbird, fleeing the scene, officers said.

Police arrested a suspect on Christmas Day and charged him with criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene of collision causing death.

Police said the driver who hit Blackbird was speeding and driving erratically.

According to Blackbird's neighbour Tammy Place, people frequently drive that way on Fife Street.

"There are no speed bumps on the road," she said. "There is no sign saying slow down, there's kids in the area, or a park nearby."

Place said she would like to see those changes made to keep her children and other people's loved ones safe.

Blackbird's death was the third fatal pedestrian crash in Winnipeg in a week. On Dec. 20 a 67-year-old woman was struck by a bus on Portage Avenue. Three days later, a 53-year-old woman was hit by van while crossing McPhillips Street at Pacific Avenue. The driver in that collision is also facing charges.

The suspect in the collision that took Blackbird's life, 44-year-old Christopher Ronald Teebles, remains in police custody.
