Firefighters were on scene at a feed mill in St. Boniface Thursday after being called back to deal with a blaze that first broke out on Monday.
Officials said the fire was in a grain hopper and crews were dousing it with water to make sure it didn't flare up again.
"If you don't get it all, there's just a little ember burning. It flares up and it keeps firing up and we're trying to stop it from coming back," said District Chief Jo Vanderhost.
Crews first responded late Monday to the fire at Feed-Rite on Speers Road. On Tuesday, it re-ignited and firefighters were called back. Wednesday, they had to return once more and were there into Thursday.
The cold weather has also posed challenges for crews.
"The smoke and fire (aren't) really a big hazard. It's the water, the ice, the cold (are problems) here," said District Chief Frank Leswick.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but fire crews told CTV News the grinding of grain inside the plant may have caused a spark.
A damage estimate has not yet been determined.
