A 44-year-old man was charged with second degree murder after 45-year-old Darryl "Sonny" Sinclair was stabbed to death around 11:30 Thursday night inside a Manitoba Housing suite in the 200 block of Dufferin Avenue.

"When I heard the news, my knees just started shaking," says Mike Sinclair, Daryl's nephew.

Witnesses say they heard arguing in the halls before a fight broke out. "They were just arguing," says Robert Erickson. But about 30 minutes later, witnesses found the fifth floor full of blood.

"I knew something terrible was going to happen," said one witness in the building, adding the two men were known to be heavy drinkers.

Sinclair 's family says the 45-year-old victim did have a troubled past including drugs, alcohol and crime.

"He was a good family man no matter what," says Sinclair 's niece Sheila Sinclair. She says her uncle had been out of jail for five years and was hoping to reconnect with his children.

"He told me he was hoping to recover from what he's done and hopefully he would have picked up life from there," says Mike Sinclair.

Director of Manitoba Housing Security Kevin Gamble tells CTV news security had dealt with a number of incidents involving both the victim and the accused in the past. He adds the building has 24-hour security and cameras to monitor the building.

Robert Carl Prince is charged with second-degree murder.
