An RCMP officer based in Shamattawa is teaming up with an animal rescue organization in the U.S. to help control the dog population up north.

Gennifer Furkalo recently sent five puppies from Shamattawa to Winnipeg to be adopted by families in southern Manitoba.

She says the dog population is out of control in the remote community. So, she has been trying to raise money to bring veterinarians up north to spay and neuter the feral dogs.

Her efforts got the attention of ARC, an Animal Rescue Coalition in Washington D.C. It plans to bring a team of vets and animals techs up to Gillam to open a temporary spay and neuter clinic. The organization will also cover the cost of transporting the dogs from Shamattawa to Gillam for the procedures.

Furkalo says the plan will see 100 to 150 dogs spayed and neutered.
