A cougar was caught in a trap this week, something that has only happened once before in Manitoba, conservation officials say.

A man who was trying to trap coyotes near Turtle Mountain Provincial Park ended up with a dead cougar instead.

The body is now in the hands of conservation officials, who plan to study it in hopes of finding out more about the cougar population in Manitoba.

Conservation officials say they usually receive about one confirmed cougar sighting a year.
