A St. Vital man who works at a daycare is facing several child pornography charges.

He was identified by a police officer in Toronto earlier this month and his home in Winnipeg was searched on Saturday, police said.

The suspect, 28-year-old Joel Daniel Stubson, works at the St. Germain Day Care, the executive director of the daycare, Carol Jones, told CTV News.

She said daycare employees are shocked and parents have been notified about the arrest. Concerned parents have been calling the daycare all day, she added.

Jones said the daycare performs background checks on employees and follows protocols concerning child safety at all times.

The daycare serves 60 kids from 2- to 12-years old.

Police said, at this point, they do not know whether any of the images found involve any of the children at the daycare centre.

Police said they were led to Stubson after an officer from the Toronto Police Service's child exploitation unit went online undercover on Jan. 9 and 10. The officer interacted with a person who shared files that included videos and images of child abuse.

On the morning of Jan. 15, police in Winnipeg executed a search warrant at the Stubson's residence in St. Vital.

Police seized computer equipment and a preliminary search by police technicians revealed thousands of images of child abuse, officers said.

Stubson is charged with possessing child pornography, accessing child pornography, making child pornography available and distributing child pornography.

He has been released on a promise to appear in court.
