Two burning homes fire crews were called to in Winnipeg Saturday evening were grow-ops, police said on Sunday morning.

A fire broke about in a home in the 1300 block of William Avenue West at about 4:30 p.m.

Neighbours said they heard an explosion and it's believed a 29-year-old man was rewiring the electricity when something went wrong.

Firefighters found one man and a dog in a garage and the man was taken to hospital in unstable condition, police said.

Fire crews also found a marijuana grow-op in the home.

Police seized about 710 marijuana plants with an estimated street value of $800,000 and growing equipment worth an estimated $20,000.

Police are still investigating and, as of Sunday morning, no charges had been laid.

At about 7:30, another fire broke out at about home in the 700 block of Clifton Street in the West End.

Smoke was pouring out of the windows of the single-storey home when crews arrived.

A 50 man in the home was taken to hospital in stable condition.

Crew also discovered a grow-op in this home.

Police later discovered a large quantity of marijuana plant material and approximately $1,500 worth of growing equipment.

Police have busted 72 grow-ops in the past year. This month alone, at least four other grow-ops in Winnipeg have been discovered and police have seized marijuana plants with a total street value of about $3 million.

Kristine Kohinsky, who lives near the grow-op on William Avenue West, said she rarely saw the man who lived in the home.

"You don't see him outside in the yard or anything, you see him like once a month," Kohinsky said.

That's one of the signs of a grow-op police say Winnipeggers should be on the lookout for.

Police are asking Winnipeggers to be vigilant and report suspect grow-ops to police. For information on how to spot a grow operation, see this page of the Winnipeg Police Service website.
