The province says a deal has been reached with cab companies and a safety-shield manufacturer to keep taxis on the road.

Winnipeg's two largest cab companies, Unicity and Duffy's, had threatened to pull their cabs off the road at 11 p.m. Monday night.

The deadline for new safety shields to be installed had been set for the end of Monday.

Cab companies had said Monday they were concerned over changes to a payment agreement for the new full-length protective shields.

Details of the new agreement reached Tuesday were not released.
