Wal-Mart Canada plans to expand its supercentre concept to Winnipeg and Quebec.

The extra-large locations combine general merchandise and groceries.

The retail giant said it will work on opening 40 Canadian supercentres beginning in February by renovating and relocating some existing stores, along with constructing new ones.

In Winnipeg, the supercentre stores will involve renovations to existing stores, and not new builds,  in the St. Vital, Polo Park and Unicity locations.

The supercentres won't be up and running in Winnipeg until June, at the earliest, said officials.
