Members of a Southern Manitoba First Nation have voted in favour of a historic land claim settlement that would bring tens of millions of dollars to the community.

More than 86 per cent of the people who cast ballots on the Roseau River First Nation on Tuesday voted in favour of the deal.

The $80.6 million settlement is with the federal government.

Chief Terry Nelson says it covers the land that was taken from his people in 1903.

Under the deal, the community would get about $10,000 per acre of land. It also guarantees each member about $5,000.

The remaining $61 million will go into a community trust fund.

Members of the First Nation who chose to vote were given $50 to cover transportation costs, say officials.

More than 900 of the 1,444 band members cast ballots in the land claim vote.
