NDP MLA George Hickes has announced he will not seek re-election in the fall.

Hickes has served as MLA for the Point Douglas area since 1990.

He was the first Inuit person elected to the Manitoba Legislature.

Hickes has served as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba since 1999, when the NDP formed government.

In a statement, Hickes said working with constituents in Point Douglas has offered the greatest fulfillment.

"Over the last decade there have been striking advancements in housing renovations, community patrols, and grassroots anti-crime work," said Hickes.

Premier Greg Selinger also gave credit to Hickes in a statement.

"George has given stellar service to the party, his constituents and the Assembly," said Selinger.

Hickes plans to stay on until the Oct. 4 provincial election.
