A Winnipeg couple with 29 cats has received some welcome news: the city is allowing them to keep all of their pets.

Lyle Lay and his wife were granted an excess animal permit Monday night by a city committee.

Normally, the city only allows three cats per household.

The Lay family started taking in strays more than a decade ago. The couple did have 30 felines, but had to put their oldest down Monday morning.

No one spoke out against the family and their cats. In fact, Lay's neighbours showed up in support of the application.

"We've had more support than anyone else, there's too many to name," says Lyle Lay.

The committee decided Lay must make sure he has ten littler boxes to accommodate his 29 cats.

The permit will last for one year and then the couple will have to re-apply.
