A Manitoba couple is devastated after their dog was attacked and killed by two larger dogs.

Murielle and Roger Levreault say they looked out their window in Lorette on Friday morning to see their 11-year-old dog Taffy being pulled apart by their neighbour's two larger dogs.

By the time they got outside, it was too late.

The Levreaults say their grandson was playing in the same area the day before, making them fear what could have happened.

"Is it going to be a child next time?" said Murielle Levreault. "That is my biggest worry. Will (it) happen to a child?"

The owner of the dogs couldn't be reached, but a bylaw officer told CTV News the animals were put down. Both were cross breeds.

The attack has one expert speaking out about responsible pet ownership.

"You never know what's going to trigger that innate ability to do what they are bred for," said Bill MacDonald, CEO of the Winnipeg Humane Society.

There is no word yet on whether charges will be laid against the owner of the two dogs.
