Warmer weather is creating hazardous ice conditions on rivers, lakes and drainage ditches throughout Manitoba, officials with Manitoba Water Stewardship warned on Sunday.

Ice is getting thinner and there are many sections of open water. Officials are warning Manitobans not to ski, sled or snowmobile on any frozen bodies of water.

People living near water should be especially careful to prevent children and pets from wandering onto the ice, officials warned.

The warning includes river ice within the city of Winnipeg, which officials said is extremely hazardous at this time.
