City council has approved a parking rate hike for some parts of Winnipeg.

Last week, a city committee gave the initial green light to the move.

The Winnipeg Parking Authority had been asking to increase rates from $1 to $2 in high demand areas, such as Portage Avenue, Broadway and parts of Main Street.

People will also have to pay $1 for evening parking, which is currently free.

The plan also calls for drivers to start paying on-street parking one hour earlier, beginning at 8 a.m., instead of the current 9 a.m. start. Fines for parking infractions would also increase to $60, from $40.

City council approved the parking plan by a vote of 14 – 2.

Some critics of the plan argue it hurts people in neighbourhoods who can least afford the increase. They suggest the city should instead target areas like Corydon Avenue, where parking is free for certain periods of time.
