The province has pledged $3.9 million to help continue Greyhound bus service through to March 31, 2012 in Manitoba.

In September 2009, Greyhound Canada said it would stop running passenger bus service in the Manitoba if it did not receive government support.

The province first offered up funding in January 2010 to aid the continuation of Greyhound service.

"We have just completed our consultation process with other jurisdictions and with Manitobans from all over the province," said Steve Ashton, the province's transportation minister.

"We've heard that bus service is important to Manitobans and we are committed to making changes, where appropriate, to help new and existing operators improve their viability and provide opportunities for new service while minimizing reductions."

Ashton acknowledged the current bus system is unsustainable in the long term, but said changes would take time to properly implement.
