An 18-year-old woman faces a charge in connection with the stabbing death of a 42-year-old woman last week in Winnipeg.

The incident took place around 8:30 p.m. on April 20 outside the Merchants Hotel, near the corner of Selkirk Avenue and Andrews Street, in the 500 block of Selkirk Avenue.

Officers said the victim and family members were outside the hotel when a verbal argument took place between the victim and a group of females, believed to be young adults.

The argument escalated and Sheila Fontaine, 42, was stabbed, said police. She was rushed to hospital in critical condition following the stabbing, but later died from injuries.

Officers said witnesses held one of the suspects at the scene of the stabbing.

Teya Wynter Spence, 18, of Winnipeg faces a charge for manslaughter.

The homicide unit is continuing to investigate.
