The provincial government is investing $100,000 to build up Victoria Beach.

The plan is to use beach aggradation, a process that promotes sand deposits which will build up beaches where there is shoreline erosion.

"What it is is a fabric device that you fill with sand and it amounts to an artificial reef," says Tom Farrell who is the Reeve of the RM of Victoria Beach.

Farrell says he learned about this technique on the internet while looking for a solution. However, this method isn't sitting well with everyone who lives in Victoria Beach.

"You don't simply do research on the internet to see whether or not it's worth attempting," says Stuart Juzda. "Rather you actually take a serious look at the project itself before you spend the money."

This grant announcement comes after months of debate between cottagers on how to fix the eroding banks.

Some cottagers put up a rock wall which angered other Victoria Beach residents. Those opposed to the wall say the decision by a few to protect their lake front properties was taking up space on the public beach. The province issued a stop work order until the issue could be resolved.

Officials say this is the first pilot project of its kind on Lake Winnipeg.
