A teenager has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of a restaurant employee. Police said the teen suspect has a criminal record and they describe some of his past offences as violent.

Fifty-six-year-old Gerry Crayford, a delivery driver at a Pizza Hotline in the 1100 block of Concordia Avenue, died Monday after an incident Sunday morning.

Police were called to the restaurant around 2:40 a.m. for a report of a commercial robbery by two male suspects.

Crayford was found injured and rushed to hospital in critical condition.

It's believed he was attacked with an axe.

Crayford had been on life support since Sunday morning and his family made the choice to keep him alive until his organs could be donated.

"I think that's one of the positive things we can bring forward regarding this incident is that many people will benefit from this individual," said Const. Natalie Aitken, a spokesperson for Winnipeg police.

Those who knew Crayford said he was a caring man and a father and grandfather. They're reeling from the fatal attack.

"To do something like this to such a nice guy is just crazy," said a woman named Haley.

Shortly after 11 p.m. Monday, a 15-year-old male was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Officers continue to investigate and said more arrests are still possible.
