RCMP said a woman has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of a three-year-old boy on May 18.

Officers and emergency crews were called to the community of Peguis First Nation around 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

An initial investigation showed the child was hit by a vehicle near a residence and the vehicle did not remain at the scene, said officers.

The child was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

On Friday, RCMP said Alanda Porter, 33, of Winnipeg had been charged with failing to remain at the scene of an accident causing death. She is being held in custody.
