A family gripped by past tragedies is now mourning another death. Relatives are grieving after a man was found killed in a downtown hotel on the weekend.

Police were called to the St. Regis Hotel on Smith Street at about 11:35 a.m. Saturday.

Initially, officers said the death was suspicious. Hotel staff indicated the victim had trauma injuries to the upper body, said police.

On Tuesday, police confirmed a homicide investigation was underway. It appears the victim was beaten to death.

Police identified the victim as Leslie Alex Okemow, 29, of Gods Lake Narrows. He was staying with relatives in the suite at the time of the incident.

"It's the third son I lost. It's hard for me, but I keep praying to be strong," said Ellis Okemow.

One of his four sons died in a car accident. Last year, another son, George Okemow, died when the family's home was set on fire. Ellis Okemow's fourth son was charged with manslaughter for George's death.

Family said they don't know why anyone would hurt Leslie Okemow.

"I miss him. He was a good dad to me," said Andrew Okemow, Leslie Okemow's seven-year-old son.

Investigators are now reviewing surveillance video from the hotel. Staff said there are cameras located on each floor, along with in the lobby and outside the main door.

"I hope they catch the suspect --- whoever did this to my son," said Ellis Okemow.

The family plans to bury Leslie alongside his two brothers in Gods Lake.

Officers continue to investigate and are asking anyone with information regarding the incident at the St. Regis to call police at 986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
