Fans of the NHL in Winnipeg are still waiting for official word on whether or not the Atlanta Thrashers will be moved to Manitoba.

May 24 was the day some had expected an announcement would be made.

In an email sent to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Monday, NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said "it's safe to say there will be no announcement on Tuesday."

Lawyers involved in a potential sale of the Thrashers met over the weekend, but there's been no word on a deal being reached.

The asking price for the team is believed to be $170 million, with $60 million of that going to the NHL as a relocation fee.

There's no indication on when an official announcement could be made.

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz, however, believes it could be soon.

"Maybe later on this week or, if they decide, maybe after the Stanley Cup playoffs - but one way or the other we're quite confident the deal will be finalized and all the I's and T's will be dotted and crossed," he said.

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed was also asked about the situation regarding the Thrashers.

"The Thrashers…are in an extraordinaire position because of the amount of the (financial) losses that are associated with the team. We have not yet seen a path where we can reverse those losses fast enough," said Reed.

"It is not a lack of the city being willing to step up and do something about it. It is a partner with deep enough pockets to be willing to sustain pretty significant losses…anytime we lose a major sports franchise, it is tough. So it's going to hurt the city, but we will withstand it just fine," said Reed.

Reports out of St. John's said that the Manitoba Moose team, meanwhile, will move there and will operate under Mark Chipman's ownership for one year before a local ownership group takes over. That same report said the announcement would happen this Friday so that is another wait-and-see event for hockey fans.
