RCMP say a constable with Dakota Ojibway Police Service is facing a number of charges.

Officers said the charges relate to a complaint in the RM of Portage la Prairie. Police were called around 5 a.m. on May 23.

An investigation found a 16-year-old girl had been assaulted at a home, said RCMP.

A 39-year-old man, who is a member of the Dakota Ojibway Police Service, was arrested at the scene and faces multiple charges, including forcible confinement, assault causing bodily harm and assault with a weapon, said RCMP.

The suspect was also charged with sexual assault and sexual interference in connection with an earlier incident involving the same victim, said officers.

The Dakota Ojibway Police Service said the officer was off duty during the alleged incidents.

Chief Doug Palson suspended the officer in December 2010, when RCMP began an investigation.

"(I'm) shocked and disappointed," said Palson.

He describes the charges as serious, but hopes they don't tarnish the entire service.

"It's tough when organizations go through this. All our members, the vast majority...are working hard in the communities," he said. The police service plans to meet with the community to address any concerns.

The constable will remain suspended until the charges are dealt with in court.

The name of the officer charged will not be released in order to protect the identity of the victim, said RCMP.
