Police arrested two teen girls after they unsuccessfully mugged two different women in downtown Winnipeg on Friday.

Officers say the two 16-year-old suspects assaulted a 35-year-old woman in the area of Portage Avenue and Fort Street at around 8:40 a.m. The girls kicked the woman repeatedly, but she managed to hold onto her belongings and the girls fled.

One suspect was located in a hotel lobby in the 200 block of Portage Ave by an employee. Police say she was arrested without incident.

At the time of the arrest police learned of a second mugging. Officers say the two suspects pushed a 30-year-old woman against a wall and demanded her purse in the area of Portage Ave and Smith Street. The suspects were scared off by two passersby, say police.

With help from Downtown Watch members, Police arrested the second teen at around 10:00 a.m. near the intersection of Donald Street and Graham Avenue.

Investigators say both females were arrested for their alleged involvement in a break and enter that had happened earlier at the Forks Market. The suspects jumped on a restaurant counter and attempted to open the cash register. Police say the suspects fled with nothing.

Both teens are being detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre and have been charged with two counts robbery, breaking and entering and assault.
