RCMP have a new tool to track elder abuse cases in Canada.

At an announcement Wednesday, police rolled out a new computer system aimed at specifically recording elder abuse cases.

"If I get an amazing number of stats in the first 60 days, we will have to say, ‘Okay, we are not doing enough and we are going to re-energize our focus,'" said Sgt. Robert Cooke from the RCMP's community policing services.

Marianne Clemens, 84, said her abuse was hidden. It started with friends slowly influencing her to pay for things.

"Wanting and needing friends, of course, you want to please them," said Clemens.

Clemens' focus now is to share her story with others so that others don't become victims of elder abuse.

At the announcement Wednesday, other senior citizens shared stories of being threatened and faced with demands for money.

Police hope the new tracking technique will give a better picture of the problem's scope.

"The reality is it's there. We know it's there – each and every detachment member," said Cooke.

Officers said elder abuse can involve a range of things, including physical and sexual abuse, along with financial demands and neglect.

There is also a seniors' abuse support line in place in Manitoba. Anyone who needs help, or knows of someone else who does need assistance, can call the line at 1-888-896-7183.
