The province is implementing a mediation service to deal with motorists appealing Manitoba Public Insurance decisions about injury compensation, officials announced Thursday.
Manitobans injured in motor vehicle accidents who are unhappy with MPI's decisions on personal injury claims can appeal to an independent mediation office starting this summer.
It's a two-year pilot project previously announced by the province last December.
Former University of Manitoba ombudsman Evelyn Bernstein will head the Automobile Injury Mediation Office pilot project. Appeals will be reviewed by qualified independent mediators, the province said Thursday.
Currently, MPI conducts internal reviews if injured claimants have an issue regarding coverage under MPI's Personal Injury Protection Plan (PIPP). If unsatisfied, the person can appeal to the Automobile Injury Compensation Appeals Commission (AICAC).
