Sixty-five homes in Souris are being evacuated as the Souris River continues to rise and the town prepares for a crest on July 6.

The town is frantically trying to raise dikes as flood waters on the move from Minot, N.D. inch closer. There are 65 homes in the danger zone which must be evacuated by Monday afternoon, officials said.

With each passing day, the Souris River creeps closer and closer to Bill and Sheila Kirkup's doorstep. They've already watched floodwaters swallow their front yard and they hope their home won't be next.

"I can't believe it can get that high, but I don't suppose all those people in Minot thought it would get that high either," said Sheila Kirkup.

In Minot, 4,200 homes have been flooded and 11,000 people were forced to abandon their homes in low-lying areas of the city last week.

The Souris River reached its peak in Minot Sunday, half a metre lower than predicted. It has since begun to level off and officials now hope the worst is over.

In Manitoba, waters levels continue to rise. The Souris River is expected to rise another three metres (9.8 feet) more. If that happens, the town's famous swing bridge will be under water.

The town thought it was prepared, but crews now have days to raise dikes even higher to protect against the rising river.

"We definitely had a great handle on it. We were prepared to maybe two more feet but not … nine more feet," said emergency coordinator Sven Kreusch. "None of our diking is that high."
