A shooting in the Lord Roberts neighbourhood early Monday morning has sent a teen to hospital.
Police were called to a townhouse in the first 100 block of Taft Crescent around 3:45 a.m. on Monday. Officers said the residence was shot at more than once.
A 14-year-old male had been shot in the lower body inside one of the residences, said police. The teen was taken to hospital in stable condition.
Jon Martins, his girlfriend Margaret Morrissett and her six-year-old daughter were sleeping next door in a side-by-side, which was also hit by the gunfire, which narrowly missed their heads.
"That's when I started crying because there (were) three bullet holes right next to our bed and the police officer said, ‘You're lucky. You (could) have been dead,'" said Morrissett.
The family of the 14-year-old victim next door did not want to be interviewed, but said Monday he was undergoing surgery to remove a bullet that went into his back. Nine people, including a one-year-old child, were inside the residence at the time of the shooting.
Police said the boy was an innocent bystander who was shot while lying on a couch.
Sources told CTV News the intended target is linked to an associate of the Rock Machine. The incident appears to be the latest in a string of gang shootings between the Hells Angels, their support Redlined Crew and the Rock Machine.
Last week, the president of the Rock Machine's home, one he shared with his parents, was apparently shot and firebombed.
The organized crime unit is now investigating.
"Members of the service are extremely concerned…we have violent crime that is occurring in our city right now where residences are being struck," said Const. Jason Michalyshen, a spokesperson for Winnipeg police.
Officers also continue to investigate the shooting on Taft Crescent.
Jon Martins said he and his family remain shaken and upset.
"To go and shoot up someone's residence when they are sleeping is pretty cowardly. If you have some kind of beef, go and man it out and deal with it like that," said Martins.
