Police confirmed Monday that a total of five people have died following a blaze that tore through a rooming house in Point Douglas on July 16.

A suspect was spotted on the front porch of the rooming house before the fire, said police. Police said a woman now faces multiple counts of second-degree murder in connection with the fire.

Emergency crews were called to the blaze in the 200 block of Austin Street North around 2 a.m. July 16, said officials.

Eight people were inside the 12-suite rooming house. Six people were taken to hospital in critical condition, said police.

Four of those died from injuries on the weekend, while police confirmed Monday a fifth person died.

"Very tragically, another individual has succumbed to his injuries," said Const. Natalie Aitken with Winnipeg police.

The sixth person has been upgraded to stable condition.

Two women were able to escape the fire.

Monday afternoon, police released the names of the fire victims.

Norman Darius Anderson, 22, Maureen Claire Harper, 54, Kenneth Bradley Monkman, 49, Dean James Stranden, 44, and Robert Curtis LaForte, 56, all died from the fire, said police.

Virginia Cook was friends with one of the fire victims, Maureen Harper. Cook said things won't be the same without her friend.

"She'd always come visit me," said Cook.

Officers arrested a suspect on Saturday afternoon around 4 p.m. at a bar in the 800 block of Main Street. Charges were upgraded on Monday, following the fifth death.

Lulonda Lynn Flett, 40, faces charges for five counts of second-degree murder and three counts of attempted murder, said police.
