Police said officers used an electronic control device to subdue a man who was armed with a hammer and causing a disturbance in Winnipeg's Spence neighbourhood.

Around 12:20 a.m. Tuesday, police were called to the area of Sargent Avenue and Langside Street.

Police said a 20-year-old male suspect had tried to rob a woman. A 36-year-old man in the area intervened and the woman was able to flee.

The suspect then assaulted the 36-year-old man and grabbed a hammer and tried to hit the victim with it, said police.

Officers responded and used the electronic control device on the suspect. He was taken to hospital and was then taken into custody.

While in custody, the suspect assaulted an officer, who received minor injuries, said police.

Ivan James Mitchell Catcheway, 20, faces a charge for robbery with a weapon and assaulting a peace officer, said police.
