Police are investigating three fires that broke out early Sunday in the St. James area.

Officers and fire crews were called to the Assiniboine Golf Club on Ness Avenue around 3:40 a.m. Sunday morning, where they said they found several golf carts on fire.

The blaze caused more than $130,000 in damages.

Crews were kept busy with two other fires early Sunday.

Around 4 a.m., crews were sent to two separate fires nearby in the 400 block of Winchester Street, which intersects with Ness Avenue.

Crews found a garage on fire at one scene, and a parked vehicle ablaze at another location in the area. Damage to the garage is estimated at $2,000 and $1,000 to the vehicle, said police.

Police said several people were taken into custody in connection with the fires. So far, however, no charges have been laid.

Investigators learned an estimated 20 to 40 people had been gathered on the golf course before the fires were reported. The group had fled the area before fire crews responded.

The arson strike force is continuing to investigate.

Anyone with information on the fires is asked to contact investigators at 986-6813, or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
