Two 15-year-old boys' charges have been upgraded to second-degree murder after a 48-year-old man died following an attack, said police.

Officers say the victim was beaten with a baseball bat just after 11:00 p.m., Aug. 24.

Investigators say a group of people was outside a residence in the 400 block of Dufferin Avenue when they were approached by two men. Police say an argument occurred and the male suspects left. They later returned, armed with a baseball bat.

The suspects approached the 48-year-old man and allegedly started assaulting him, causing him to fall to the ground. The 18-year-old woman came to his aid and she was assaulted by the suspects, said police.

The female victim was treated in hospital and released. The male victim was taken to hospital in critical condition. Police said the man died on Aug. 30.

Both teens had initially been charged with assault with a weapon, aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Charges against the pair were upgraded Tuesday to second-degree murder. They are both being detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.
