Winnipeg police are investigating a suspicious death after a woman's body was found Saturday morning.

Police have identified the woman as April Helen Hornbrook. Her family says they were shocked when police officers showed up at their door.

"They said do you know April Hornbrook? I said yes, that's my granddaughter. Sorry to tell you she is deceased," says Reginald Hornbrook.

The 24-year-old's body was found behind a vacant building in the area of Main Street and Sutherland Avenue, say police.

Her father Richard Hornbrook says she was the oldest of five children and had a four-year-old son of her own.

"She was a good person, always happy," says Hornbrook.

Police are not yet saying how she died or have anyone in custody in connection with her death.

"We don't have at this time any indication how long she was there," says Const. Natalie Aitken, of the Winnipeg Police Service. "That's something we are hoping an autopsy will be able to better pinpoint and better determine."

Hornbrooks body was found just metres away from a memorial dedicated to missing and murdered woman. It was built by a nearby church congregation.

"Their stories need to be told," says Andy Wood who is pastor of the Vineyard Church. "There needs to be a place where their lives can be remembered with honor and with dignity."

Wood says there are 22 unsolved cases of women who've gone missing or been murdered in Manitoba.

The homicide unit is now investigating this case and is asking anyone with information about the victim or had recent contact with her to call officers at 986-6508 or Crimestoppers at 786-8477.
