NBA star Steve Nash was in Winnipeg Monday to accept the St. Boniface Hospital 2011 International Award.
Nash has used his celebrity as a basketball player to be an advocate for children's rights, health and education.
"He's used his personal wealth and celebrity to improve circumstances for children across North America and South America," said Laura Ruddock from the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation.
Nash's foundation offers children everything from free cardiac care to non-profit education centres.
"We started trying to find ways where we could help, and bring people together and raise money and have an impact on kids," said Nash.
The NBA star said he was honoured to receive the award.
"I will remember this forever and I get to show off to my friends," said Nash.
He also hit the court in Winnipeg Monday, putting on a basketball clinic for youths at the University of Manitoba.
