Police have released the name of a man fatally shot near Boyd Avenue and Andrews Street on Sunday.

Officers identified the victim as David Michael Vincett, 20, of Winnipeg.

People in the area told CTV News they heard a shot around 4 a.m., but didn't see a shooter.

Earlier in the night, witnesses said a group of people were fighting in the area and some were hit with pepper spray. A short time later, shots were heard and Vincett's body was found.

It's believed he was shot in the face.

Neighbours fear rising tensions between rival street gangs are to blame.

A little more than two weeks ago, Clarky Stevenson, 15, was stabbed to death four blocks away from where Vincett was gunned down. At the time, police were concerned about possible retaliation. But officers say at this point, there is no evidence linking the two homicides.

"We are going to be exploring all possibilities with respect to this incident and should things evolve and this is tied to something else we'll find out and move forward from there, but right now, no," said Const. Jason Michalyshen.

Vincett was known to police. He had prior convictions for theft and assault.

But, police aren't currently saying whether or not he had gang ties, or if the shooting was a case of mistaken identity.

Officers are asking for anyone with information on the victim's location prior to the shooting to contact investigators at 986-6508, or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
