Manitoba Justice officials confirmed Tuesday that a man wanted by police had been released from jail in error.

Walter (Wally) Joseph Sanderson, 28, is wanted for assault and breach of probation, said police on Monday.

While he was most recently behind bars for assault, Sanderson was previously convicted for manslaughter in 2004.

Sources tell CTV News the release was the result of a paperwork mix-up.

Anyone with information on his location is advised not to approach Sanderson and is asked to instead call police immediately at 986-6222.

Sanderson's mother issued a plea Tuesday.

"Tell him I love him very much and that I want him to turn himself in, if at least not for me and his dad and least for his daughters," said Darlene Sanderson.

She said her son was released from Headingley Correctional  Centre Friday night and showed up at her door and spent the weekend with family, before leaving after getting into a fight with his girlfriend.

A review of how he ended up being accidentally released will be conducted.

A Manitoba spokesperson said accidental releases can occur in complex cases combined with human error.

More court staff have been added and additional training put into place previously to try and curb the risk of accidental releases, said officials.
