In 2010, police reported 554 homicides across Canada, the lowest rate in more than 40 years, according to Statistics Canada.

Stats Can credits the overall drop in homicides to fewer incidents in the western provinces.

Despite the country-wide drop, Manitoba leads among provinces for most homicides, with Saskatchewan and Alberta rounding out the top three.

"If you look at homicide rates overall they've been going down nationally. In Winnipeg, they've been going the other way," said Michael Weinrath a criminologist at the University of Winnipeg.

Winnipeg recorded 22 homicides in 2010, while in 2011 there have already been 32 murders.

"Right now, we haven't had a homicide for…(about) a month and then we had a short period of time where we had multiple (homicides)," said Const. Jason Michalyshen from Winnipeg police.

Brenda Earl's son Kyle was killed in 2010. The 16-year-old was her only son.

It's been more than a year and so far no arrests have been made in his death.

"I'm not at peace right now. I need closure," she said.

Brenda Earl hopes that in upcoming days or weeks, she will get closure and justice for Kyle.
