Winnipeg police are looking into the shooting death of a man in the Exchange District early Saturday morning.

Around 2:30 a.m., police responded to Rorie Street and McDermot Avenue after shots were fired. It was on Arthur Street where officers found a man who had been shot. He was taken to hospital in critical condition where he later died.

The area the victim was found in is concentrated with bars and nightclubs. Police won't say if the man was at one of those venues. Police also won't say if he was shot inside an establishment or on the street.

"The specifics of this incident and how it unfolded is something we are working through. At this time we are interviewing a number of people," said Winnipeg police Const. Natalie Aitken.

Jesse Bothelo lives in the Exchange and was on the street shortly before the incident happened. He says it was a busy night and is happy he left when he did.

"It's a close call. It's scare living downtown when stuff like that happens in your backyard," said Bothelo.

Police say it's too early to determine if the shooting is gang-related. No suspects are in custody. Anyone with information is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 786-8477.
