Winnipeg police have charged a man after a robbery on Ellice early Friday morning.

Police were called to a convenience store in the 800 block of Ellice Avenue around 5 a.m.

Officers were told a man entered the store with a firearm and demanded cash and cigarettes from the store clerks. Some money and cigarettes was taken, he fled the store.

While investigating the robbery police were flagged down around Burnell Street and Sargent Avenue. Officers say a 29-year-old man was suffering from what appeared to be an accidental self-inflicted gun shot wound. Paramedics took the man to hospital in critical condition. He has since been upgraded to stable.

Police say they found stolen property nearby. He's been charged with one count of robbery with a weapon.
