It was a night of glitz and glamour devoted to the very best in Aboriginal music.
The Aboriginal People's Choice Music Awards (APCMA) were handed out at MTS Centre Friday evening.
The sixth annual awards show embraced the stars of the present and the future. And if the awards handed out Friday are any indication, the future may belong to Winnipeg's Most, a local hip hop band.
The group took home awards for Single of the Year and Best Rap-Hip Hop CD. They won another four APCMA's Thursday night.
"This is what real accomplishment looks like," said Winnipeg's Most. "When you spend 90 per cent of your life working on music and everything based around it."
Of course for every winner experiencing the thrill of victory, someone else is experiencing the agony of defeat. Winnipeg singer Don Amero has been nominated 16 times and never managed to win.
"Surely you can't be happy to always be the bridesmaid, never the bride," he said. "I'm going to tie the knot one of these years so hopefully it's coming."
Errol Ranvill took home the Lifetime Achievement Award. Sagkeeng's Ali Fontaine won two awards, Best Country CD and Best New Artist.
Organizers say the event has been so successful they're considering taking the show on the road.
"If it happens next year or the year after that, great," said Derek McCorrister an organizer. "We're all about moving the awards and showcasing other artists across the country."
For now organizers are just content to celebrate another successful show in Winnipeg. Manito Ahbee continues Saturday with a Pow Wow competition at MTS Centre.
