Harry Gegwetch was pulled from a burning apartment building on Carlton Street on Nov. 12.

It's believed the 42-year-old man was killed and the building then set on fire.

Family members and friends are now speaking out following media reports painting Gegwetch to be a homeless man with a criminal past.

"I'd like to see positive things of all the things he's done," said Clara Smith, Gegwetch's mother.

Friends said Gegwetch was a talented powwow dancer and beader.

"It was his design…his flare of artistry," said Barb Nepinak.

"He had a lot to offer to the community. Sure, Harry had his demons and everything else but he dealt with them his own way," said Clarence Nepinak.

Getwetch had a criminal record. A month ago, he was charged after 30-year-old James Scott was attacked and beaten with a brick near Higgins Avenue and Main Street.

Right now, police said they don't believe Gegwetch's murder was in retaliation for the beating.

No arrests have been made and police continue to investigate the murder.

Officers wouldn't comment on motive – only saying that if there is a possible link, they will explore all avenues.

"I just hope they find the person that (did) it and have regrets for what he's done," said Clara Smith.

"I'm angry that (Harry is) gone, but I'm not angry at anybody. I'll just miss him," she said.

An autopsy is set for Tuesday to determine cause of death.
