Relatives and friends came together Monday to remember a man who was critically injured and found inside an apartment building after a blaze was reported there.

Harry Gegwetch, 42, died from injuries after being found in the 300 block of Carlton Street on Nov. 12.

"He was a very well-respected man," said Melvin Starr, a friend of the victim's.

Gegwetch was a former powwow dancer.

On the same day the memorial service was held for him, police announced an arrest had been made in Gegwetch's death.

Darrell Walter Longclaws, 32, was arrested on Nov. 18 and has now been charged with manslaughter for Gegwetch's death, said police.

"Whatever happened to him – they want to find out so it brings some closure," said George Spence, another friend of Gegwetch's.

Officers said there's a possibility the accused and victim been drinking before things turned violent.

The accused has a lengthy criminal record, including assaults, uttering threats and theft.

In 2001, RCMP charged with for criminal negligence causing death.

Last year, the accused was convicted of beating Faron Hall using a table leg.

Hall, known as the Homeless Hero for rescuing two people from the Red River in separate incidents, was sent to hospital.

At the time Hall was attacked, Longclaws was under a 15-year weapons ban and was only three days into a year-long probation.

While Longclaws has been charged with manslaughter for the death of Gegwetch, police anticipate arresting another suspect in the case for the fire at the building on Carlton Street.

"It's safe to say our job isn't done with future arrests," said Const. Jason Michalyshen from Winnipeg police.

"If there is someone else they need to catch, I hope they catch him (because) this needs to stop. We are losing too many of our people, our youth, our children," said Melvin Starr.

Officers continue to investigate Gegwetch's death. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call 986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 786-8477.
